Who We Are
OtherSide Entertainment is an independent game studio with offices in Concord, MA, and remote staff throughout North America. Our mission is to create deeply immersive games that draw players into richly imagined worlds; games that empower players to choose their own play-style, making their experience unique and personal; games that encourage players to team up with their friends and weave their own shared narrative; the kind of games that are powered by our players’ vision as much as our own. Together, we aim to evolve the “player-authored” tradition of Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex – all games developed by the company’s founders, Paul Neurath and Warren Spector.
The Opportunity
Argos is a multiplayer-first, immersive sim with a small, senior team under the creative direction of Warren Spector. We are looking for a Gameplay AI engineer who will work with our design team to build both systems and behaviors for our co-op multiplayer game. Areas we are developing include perception analysis, stylized path following, and “believable” animal behaviors. We’re looking for someone who is as passionate about the player experience of the AI as they are about the underlying technology.
Job Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with design to envision, implement and validate new AI features as defined by project priorities.
- Work in partnership with design to maintain our existing AI behaviors and provide improvements.
- Collaborate with the Lead Engineer to develop the project roadmap and milestone definitions.
- Work with the AI designer and other engineers to develop the technology necessary for our AI.
- This could require adding or modifying AI perception code, working on systems to model AI threat assessment, or working to generate and follow believable paths for elongated characters.
- Work with the AI designers and other engineers to create AI behaviors that “bring to life” the wilderness of Argos as the player experiences it.
- This could be implementing specific behaviors in the behavior tree, creating AI actions in the gameplay ability system, or debugging existing behaviors in game.
- Work with the Lead Engineer to appropriately schedule and maintain AI development in Unreal Engine 5.
- Work with the engineering and design teams to implement performant and maintainable solutions.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of game industry experience, or equivalent demonstrable experience. Ideal candidates will also have experience in a role focused on behavioral AI.
- Experience developing games in Unreal Engine 4 or 5. Familiarity with the nuances and details of the engine is a plus.
- Strong-level skill programming with C++ in a professional environment. Candidates who prefer clean and simple code a plus.
- Robust communication skills. Comfortable exploring ideas and issues with designers, artists and other engineers.
- Self-motivated, proactive and able to work with minimal supervision.
Additional Notes
This is a full-time, remote working role, with competitive compensation and a full suite of benefits available anywhere in the United States. All team members may be asked to occasionally travel for key meetings, as part of their job responsibilities.
Our people-first approach to game development celebrates diversity, and strives to create a safe and inclusive working environment where everyone is treated equally, with dignity, and with respect. We highly encourage candidates from diverse and under-represented backgrounds to apply, even those that may not directly meet every qualification listed for this role.
A Warning About Job Scams - We hate that we have to say it, but there are always bad actors trying to take advantage of people. We've become aware that there are scammers impersonating us with job interview messages. Please keep diligent and know that we will never have you download anything for an interview (We use Teamtailor, which is a SaaS product) and not Telegram or other message services. We also will not ever ask you for money, for you to buy your own equipment, or that you travel somewhere for an interview and we will reimburse you. When in doubt, please feel free to message the recruiter listed for each role on LinkedIn, or our CPO Juliette (https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliettedupre/) about the legitimacy of any messages.
